pyralis</i>, also known as the Big Dipper Firefly, is the most widespread, commonly occurring, abundant firefly species in the eastern United States. It is also found throughout much of Mexico. It can be observed early in the evening just before sunset displaying distinct J-shaped flash patterns while flying through open areas such as lawns and fields. Due to its ubiquity, it was the most common species of firefly commercially harvested from the 1940s through the 1980s, and it is still probably the most commonly caught firefly by curious children. Females respond by pointing their abdomen towards the male as they emit a single flash at a short delay. This species is seen flying from mid-June to early-July. However, their seasonality appears to be quite variable, arriving as early as mid-May and as late as late October, in some years.
