(2015) and the online taxonomic catalog at <a href=\"http://www.mosquitocatalog.org\">www.mosquitocatalog.org</a>.<br /> <br />A series of extensive morphology based phylogenetic studies published since 2000 by Reinert, Harbach, and Kitching resulted in 74 new, elevated or resurrected genera from what had been the single genus <i>Aedes</i>, almost tripling the number of genera in the entire family Culicidae. Wilkerson et al. (2015) restored the generic structure of the tribe Aedini (Diptera: Culicidae) to its status prior to the year 2000. Specifically, all species in the tribe are placed in the following 10 genera: <i>Aedes</i>, <i>Armigeres</i>, <i>Eretmapodites</i>, <i>Haemagogus</i>, <i>Heizmannia</i>, <i>Opifex</i>, <i>Psorophora</i>, <i>Udaya</i>, <i>Verrallina</i>, and <i>Zeugnomyia</i>. Aedine genera created in and after 2000 are placed as subgenera of genus <i>Aedes</i>; subgenera created after 2000 are placed in informal species groupings (refer to S1 Appendix and S2 Appendix in Wilkerson et al. 2015). Later, Wilkerson and Linton (2015) formally elevated three traditionally recognized subgenera (<i>Pseudoskusea</i>, <i>Rusticoidus</i> and <i>Protomacleaya</i>) within the genus <i>Aedes</i>. This classification is reflected in the online taxonomic catalog at <a href=\"http://www.mosquitocatalog.org\">www.mosquitocatalog.org</a>.<br /> <br />An editorial in the Journal of Medical Entomology (Reisen 2016) states that these revisions by Reinert and Reinert et al. \"were not universally accepted, as they led to some confusion within the mosquito control community and there were questions raised as to the validity of the underlying analyses (Savage 2005, Savage and Strickman 2004).\" They encourage authors dealing with aedine mosquitoes to maintain usage of the traditional names as referenced by Wilkerson et al.
