Minor uses include household articles, trinkets, and souvenirs which are made from the hard, bony endocarp and sold; the Cayapas indians in western Ecuador use immature fruits as a sterilizing remedy, crushing, boiling, and drinking a decoction of the husk twice daily during menstruation to stop the periods. On the market-place in Otavalo, Ecuador, the coconut husk is sold as a remedy against abdominal pains and small brooms are made from the leaf-base fibers; on Isla Puná it is used as a remedy against intestinal parasites and some kidney diseases and its leaves are used for thatch.
