Salix prolixa / Rosa woodsii Wet Shrubland
Translated Name: Mackenzie's Willow / Woods' Rose Wet Shrubland

Summary: This riparian shrubland association is found east of the Cascade Range in eastern Oregon, generally on third- or fourth-order streams. Elevations range from 825 to 1495 m (2700-4900 feet). It occurs in narrow to wide valleys that are V-, trough- and flat-shaped and have moderate gradients and moderately steep to steep sideslopes. Fluvial surfaces are alluvial bars and streambanks, most with abundant bare ground, gravel or rock exposed on the soil surface. Salix prolixa forms a scattered to dense shrub overstory. Rosa woodsii is present in the shrub understory in half of the communities sampled. Other shrub species that are occasionally present are Cornus sericea, Philadelphus lewisii, Prunus virginiana, Crataegus douglasii, Salix lucida ssp. lasiandra, and Toxicodendron rydbergii. The herbaceous layer is sparse to moderately populated with a variety of grasses, graminoids and forbs, including Juncus arcticus ssp. littoralis, Eleocharis palustris, Achillea millefolium, Rumex crispus, Clematis ligusticifolia, Urtica dioica, Solidago canadensis, and Artemisia ludoviciana. On more degraded sites, Poa pratensis and Agrostis stolonifera are abundant.

Classification Comments: This is a distinct association based on 10 plots in Oregon. None of the occurrences are in very good condition, and it is possible there is more diversity in the type than is shown in available data. The type is similar to Salix lutea / Rosa woodsii Wet Shrubland (CEGL002624), a riparian association described by Manning and Padgett (1995) from Nevada, with Salix prolixa replacing Salix lutea.

Reasons: This is a fairly rare, threatened riparian shrubland known only from third and fourth order streams in eastern central and southern Oregon. No sites are protected, and all have been heavily impacted by historic and current livestock use. There is potential for restoration at a number of sites, as part of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, and the effort to recover threatened and endangered salmon. However, this remains a rare and threatened riparian association.

Global Range: Currently, this is type is known from the Blue Mountains and the northern Basin and Range in eastern Oregon, with sites in Grant, Umatilla, Wallowa, Union, Lake, Harney, and Crook counties. It may be more widely distributed, but the sites have been so altered that it is difficult to determine its former range.
